Episode #306: President Posey

Buster Posey appears at the Giants’ press conference that introduced him as the Giants’ new President of Baseball Operations on October 1, 2024.

The “Fire Farhan” brigade got their wish, but his replacement was a bit of a surprise. Buster Posey was named President of Baseball Operations of the San Francisco Giants. It’s not often that a franchise icon gets a chance to run their team, but if anyone can succeed, it’s Buster Posey. He was introduced Tuesday at Oracle Park and he promised to please the fans and players and get back to what San Francisco Giants’ baseball is all about. This man appears to care deeply about this team, and is somewhat putting his reputation on the line. A few call this move desperate, but it seems that most Giants fans are 100% behind this move. I mean, could it be worse than Farhan? One playoff appearance and one winning record in 6 years suggests not. Farhan’s time ran out. Maybe he was given too much rope as it is. Chad and Eric talk about this monumental decision in Giants history and the potential good and bad ramifications it could have on the franchise (we think mostly good!).

Episode #305: The Last Bay Bridge Series

Blake Snell and the Giants played their last game at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Snell allowed 1 ER in 6IP and has a 1.03 ERA since coming off the IL. / Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports.

Be honest, you don’t really care about the Bay Bridge Series, but now that it’s gone, you pine for it. The Giants made their last visit to the Oakland Coliseum over the weekend for the final Bay Bridge Series, splitting the two games with their soon-not-to-be cross-bay rivals. Next year, the Giants will travel to their OWN AAA ballpark to play the A’s…wtf? Chad is joined by special guest Ryan Leong (@ryanleong) from Bay Area Sports Wrap to discuss his 25+ years of covering pro Bay Area sports and of course, Giants baseball. We take a historical look into the Giants’ franchise and how the near-move in 1993 compares with the A’s move today. We also chat about his Starter jacket collection, favorite memories at the Coliseum, Blake Snell, Logan Webb, Matt Chapman, the Giants’ playoff chances (now officially on life support), and frankly, criticize both Melvin and Zaidi. Ok, we are two grumpy 50-year old men shaking our fists at the Giant clouds in the sky.

The Giants have one of the worst records after the All Star Break at 5-12 and are almost completely out of the playoff picture. That said, they are getting a lot of their regular roster back and can make ground against the Padres starting tonight. The boys also talk about what the Giants did and didn’t do at the trade deadline, and how they may hope to compete with the Dodgers and Padres rosters in the future. Plus, Hunter Pence is going on the Giants’ “Wall of Fame” on 9/17! Remember, you can catch us live most Mondays at 12:15 pm PDT.

Episode #250: Stay Calm and Put the DFA Button Down

We recorded episode #250 and reviewed the week in Giants’ baseball. Not the greatest week, going 2-3, but there were many challenges to overcome from COVID and injuries, Farhan is making deals everywhere, a career minor-leaguer finally got his chance in the show, and the rosters have contracted. Eric has a mini-rant about fair weather Giants fans at the end, so don’t miss it!

Episode #235: Pinch-Hit Bombs Rule

What an exhausting week of Giants’ baseball, filled with a heart-crushing defeat, victories snatched away from losses at the last minute, and back to back jacks twice, Chad and Eric talk about it all. The Giants maintain their NL West lead, but it did slip a bit to the streaking Dodgers. We also talk about the pros and cons of a team that relies, more than any other team, on the long-ball to score runs. We’re in the last lap of the mile now, and the Giants have their eyes surprisingly set on capturing the division title for the first time in nine years. All of our episodes are also available on Apple, Spotify, Google, Stitcher, and most major podcast platforms.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – JUNE 26: San Francisco Giants’ Mike Yastrzemski (5) celebrates with teammate Curt Casali (2) after hitting the game winning walk-off RBI double in the 10th inning of their game at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Calif., on Saturday, June 26, 2021. Chad, Eric and Dills chat about the team with the best record in the bigs. Over the past week, they won 4 in a row before dropping their last 2. We had fun talking about the 2 game sweep, including the crazy extra inning games against the Angels and A’s and the frustration of going 0-13 with runners in scoring position in last night’s loss to the Dodgers. Plus, an all-star update, injuries, a Giant gets suspended for PEDs, foreign substances, and more!

Episode #208: Eight Games

Giants’ shortstop hits a grand slam against the A’s on September 20, 2020 to solidify a win and keep them on pace to nab the 8th wildcard slot. Photo: FOX Sports.

Eight games left. That’s it. This is our last podcast before the end of the 2020 regular season, and the Giants are just on the outside looking in at a playoff spot. Despite having a .500 record like the Reds and Brewers, both teams hold the tie-breaker over the Giants (intra-divisional record), and that may be key in deciding the Giants’ playoff fate. Chad and Eric review the 3-2 week and forecast the Giants chances for making the playoffs, which may take 6 wins in their last 8 games to ensure a spot.

Chad and Eric will be captaining a team of Giants fans this Thursday at 7pm PT to defend our title in Giants trivia. We’ll be joining other captains, including Andrew Baggarly, Grant Brisbee, Marty Lurie and many more. If you’re interested, tickets are $30 and all proceeds go to benefit the Sonoma Family Meal and Big Basin Recovery Fund. Go to www.giantstrivia.eventbrite.com.

Video of episode #208 will be posted later down below

Episode #203: HeartBreak After Heartbreak

Somehow the baseball season is still pushing forward, despite the Cardinals are now the “infected” team. In fact, although the Giants have played 16 games, which is more than a quarter of the way through the season, the Cards have only played 5 games….FIVE.

Willie Dills joined Chad this week to talk about what may be the most depressing week in regular season TortureCast history. Not only did the Giants drop 7 of 8, but they blew three consecutive save opportunities. The first was the worst: a 5-run lead in the 9th (first time since 1929 a lead this big was blown in the 9th), the next night it was a 3-run 9th inning lead, and last night it was a walk off 2-run HR by the Angels. All 3 were blown by Trevor Gott, who is officially out as closer. However, the defense helped put Gott in the situations in 2 of the 3 blown saves. Adding salt to the wound in between was a 15-3 blowout loss to the A’s. Sitting dead last in the NL West at 8-16, the Giants’ playoff hopes have dwindled to a microscopic level.

BTW, where’s Joey Bart?

Episode #177: Longo Saves the Week

bochybaybridgetrophy

Bruce Bochy and gang take the Bay Bridge Series trophy in his 4,000th game managed on Sunday. They were apparently very happy with it.

You can download the episode here, or stream it below!

After a sweep at the hands of the Cubs essentially eliminated any chance the Giants have of making the postseason, Evan Longoria had a great weekend against the A’s, enabling the Giants to take the Bay Bridge trophy and climb back to 4 games out of the wild card. But, if they had just taken one game in that crazy series against the Cubs, they’d be 2 out right now. With precious little time remaining, the Giants have to step on the gas…now!

Eric and Chad review the 2-3 week and talk about players’ weekend, Bochy’s 4,000th managed game, Cueto’s rehab, Pablo’s TJ surgery, who’s hot and not and more!

Episode #148: Are the Giants Buyers or Sellers?

FUCKINGBAYBRIDGETROPHY

Really, does anyone fucking care about this piece of shit?!

You can download the episode here, or stream it below!

https://torturecast.podomatic.com/enclosure/2018-07-26T16_22_42-07_00.mp33

The Giants have not been too bad, but they haven’t been great at all. They are 3-5 since we last recorded and are slipping in the standings, now in 4th place, 4.5 games behind the Dodgers, needing to leap three teams in the NL West. Things aren’t great. Things aren’t horrible. Things are just…meh.

Chad and Eric catch up on the Giants over the last two weeks, with series against Oakland and Seattle, with the All Star game in between. Posey, Cutch, Belt and Crawford have been woeful since the break, and all four maybe even worse over the last month. The bright spots are Derek Rodriguez, and more recently, Hunter Pence.

If the Giants want a shot at the West, they may need a bat or arm. But, will they be buyers this far back? Or, will they sell and reload for 2-3 years from now?

Enjoy Episode #148 of the TortureCast. The Giants need a push!
