Episode #280: Righting the Ship

#280: Righting the Ship

Giants rookie Patrick Bailey hits his first career home run in the second inning against Miami’s Jesus Luzardo on Sunday at Oracle Park. Scott Strazzante/The Chronicle

Chad and Eric discuss the great homestand and week the Giants had, winning 5 of 6 before heading off on a 7 game roadie. Casey Schmitt continues to make a huge impact, and we saw another rookie make his debut on Friday, get his first hit and start on Saturday and his first homer on Sunday. Patrick Bailey is up for an injured Joey Bart, and we’ll see who moves off the roster when Bart comes back. The pen is better, the 2-out hits are off the charts, the defense is better. These are all of the elements that were lacking thus far. Now, can the Giants keep it up? We also chat about Correa and Rodon as “what if?” Giants, and we speculate on where MadBum may end up, or if he’ll even be signed by anyone.

Episode #279: Holy Schmitt!!

#279: Holy Schmitt!!

In a shorter, conversational-style episode, Willie and Chad look at the bright spots of the Giants’ season, despite their current record. The most recent highlight has to be the call-up and performance of Casey Schmitt. Not only does he have a great baseball name, but he has torn it up in his short week, accumulating as many hits (13) in 28 at bats as David Villar has in 88 at bats! (Villar was also just optioned to AAA, so…). Both the Nationals and Braves recently won World Series after very poor starts to the season (Nats were 19-31!), so the season is by no means over, but they are getting buried in the NL West at 8.5 games back of the Dodgers. But, at just 2 games back of the Wild Card, that’s going to be their primary target. We also pay homage to Bay Area great Vida Blue, who passed away last week.

Episode #240: Not the Captain?!

Captain Belt and his sea men deboard the plane in Denver. This was all part of the annual rookie hazing. Just fantastic.

You can download the episode here, or stream it below!

A fantastic 5-1 week saw the Giants’ NL West lead grow by one game to 2 and their magic number shrink to 5 with 6 to play. Unfortunately, the good vibes were marred somewhat when we found out that Captain Belt has a fractured finger that could jeopardize any playoff participation…and he had been one of the hottest players in baseball, cranking out homers 28 and 29 in a game this week. Eric, Chad and Willie talk about the week that was and look forward to the last 6 games of the regular season as the Giants try and clinch the NL West and avoid game #163 and the wild card game. Plus, we bring back the old segment, “Why we will win it all!”

With 12 games remaining, the stakes are high. Who will come out on top? We cover this and more! Audio version is available wherever you get your podcasts.

Episode #235: Pinch-Hit Bombs Rule

San Francisco Giants’ LaMonte Wade Jr. uses the “Wakanda Forever” gesture as he approaches first base after hitting a go-ahead 2-run homer in the top of the 9th inning to steal a victory away from the A’s. (Jeff Chiu/AP)

What an exhausting week of Giants’ baseball, filled with a heart-crushing defeat, victories snatched away from losses at the last minute, and back to back jacks twice, Chad and Eric talk about it all. The Giants maintain their NL West lead, but it did slip a bit to the streaking Dodgers. We also talk about the pros and cons of a team that relies, more than any other team, on the long-ball to score runs. We’re in the last lap of the mile now, and the Giants have their eyes surprisingly set on capturing the division title for the first time in nine years. Episode #234: Controlling Their Own Destiny

San Francisco Giants’ Brandon Crawford signed a two-year extension worth $32 million last week that will keep him in SF through the 2023 season. (Sports Illustrated)

You can download the episode here, or stream it below!

Chad, Eric and Willie talk about the last two weeks of Giants baseball, including Brandon Crawford’s 2 year, $32 million extension and how that might affect Posey and Belt, the fact that they went 10-3 and only increased their NL West lead by a game, the dramatic come-from-behind victories, the taxed bullpen, and how this team continues to be the best in baseball with its depth, consistency and resilience. We also make fun of our pre-season win predictions and look forward to how the Giants can clinch the West, something we didn’t even consider back in April.
