Mr. Bumgarner Goes to Washington

The thing about parenthood and modern technology, is that we now have an obligation to put our children first before a Giants playoff game. Clearly parents didn’t do so before the age of the DVR. If I transport myself back to 1989 as a parent, I’m sure I could tell my wife that I couldn’t take our daughter to play rehearsal and our son to the park for some quality outside time because the Giants are playing the Cubs in the NLCS. When she responds, “just record it on the VCR,” I’d cooly respond with, “we only have our wedding tape here…no blanks!” Problem solved.

Well, not so much tonight. Despite the pit of despair that was wallowing in my soul at work as first pitch drew near, I did have fatherly duties to attend to, and my sidekick DVR could just suck up all the inning into its digital innards for viewing later. Of course, this meant that I had to cut myself off from the digital world and disable my MLB At Bat notifications as I ventured out into the natural environment and avoid eye contact from any other parent who might tell me the score.

Mission: success!

So, I finally tuned into the game 90 minutes after first pitch, and although I didn’t get to enjoy Crawford’s grand slam live, it was live to me. Plus, I got to skip any annoying Viagra and insurance commercials to boot. Oh, and I also muted the TV because I couldn’t stand the Kruk (Jon, that is) and company. I watched baseball alone and in complete silence. Wait, is that a scene from “The Fan?”

Alas, I was overjoyed with the progress of the game, and eventually caught up to live when it was 7-0. I listened to Posey’s RBI single in the car as I picked up my daughter, and we both enjoyed a live viewing of the final 3 outs at home before putting the kids to bed.

The moral of the story: have your wife’s homemade shredded chicken tacos before you watch a DVR’d Giants game.

Oh, I forgot to mention that. They were epic, and may now become my rally enchiladas. With Cholula and crema, of course.

As far as the baseball game was concerned, Bumgarner was incredible. Willie, Ben and myself all predicted Giants wins, but with different shades of orange. I predicted a tight 4-3 nailbiter, Ben an extra-inning win, and Willie just about Nostradamus’d it: a 3-hit shout out by Bum. Well, it was a 4-hit shutout.

Aside from Bum’s dominant performance, and maybe it wouldn’t have mattered IF the Giants had faced Cole, but I think that was the key to the Pirates’ chances in this game. I can’t (can) blame Hurdle for using Cole on Sunday, with a chance to win the NL Central, but the Cards had Wainright going later against lowly Arizona, a low probability of the Cards losing that game.

Giants benefited from the NL Central race, IMHO. If the Giants had the same chance to with the West, we might have seen Bum go on Sunday instead of tonight.

And perhaps the result would have been different in that alternate universe.

That’s 8 consecutive playoff victories and 7 consecutive elimination game victories for the Giants. At some point those streaks have to end…

…right?

Or, just perhaps, this even-year-thing has some teeth.

Let’s hope they can earn a split in Washington and close it out at AT&T Park on Tuesday, but that’ll be a tall order against the best starting rotation in the bigs.

Oh, is Hunter Pence the man?

YES! YES! YES!

Chad

Willie, Ben and Chad once again head to Zeke’s after a Giants game to talk about many exciting events. First and foremost, the Giants blanked the Diamondbacks 5-0 to maintain their 2.5 game deficit behind the Dodgers and their 4 game lead on the wild card. We also talk about “video gamer’s” night with Todd McFarlane before the game (Ben got the sweet Assassin’s Creed figurine).

Even more exciting was the fact that we had clubhouse access for the first time. Chad snagged interviews with Panda, Pence and Affeldt before the game, and those interviews can be found here. We also spoke with Matt Duffy after the game (interview is at the end of this bonusode) about his critical 7th inning double to put the game away. Pour a shot and a beer, sit down, and enjoy another bonusode with the boys from TortureCast!

We’ll be in the clubhouse again for Saturday’s game against LA. Should be an anxiety-ridden ride for all.

Ben and Chad round up the last week that saw Buster Posey win the NL player of the week (.565!!) and Madison Bumgarner earned NL pitcher of the month for August, yet his monthly ERA (1.97) was actually higher than Kershaw’s ERA for the year. Yeah, we know who’s winning the Cy Young, and maybe even MVP. The Giants had a rough few days in Colorado, but bounced back nicely in Detroit, but because the Dodgers aren’t cooling off, they find themselves 3.5 games back after pulling to within 1.5 earlier in the week.

The good news is that the Giants have a 3.5 game lead in the wild card, they still have 6 games yet to play against the Dodgers, and Buster Posey found his spinach. We also talk Belt’s possible return, Morse’s injury, and how Panik and Susac are exceeding all expectations so far.

Join us for the recorded stream, a stream while we recorded on the internetz. Don’t forget, we now stream all of our podcasts LIVE on YouTube around 9:30 pm PDT every Monday. We will also have clubhouse access this Wednesday and Saturday, so we’ll be sure to take our anti-anxiety medication before we ask Hunter Pence how fluffy his shower towel is.

Eric Nathanson (@2outhits) pinch hit to join Chad on Episode 69, which was streamed live on YouTube. We talked about the Giants’ 6-1 homestand, the continuation of the May 22 game in Colorado, which the Giants won 4-2 (and that did NOT extend the winning streak, by the way), and the heartbreaking way (6 times this year, in fact) the Rockies exhumed the souls of the Giants once again. Seriously, if the Giants had only won three out of the six games in which they were leading the Rockies, they’d have a one game lead in the NL West right now.

Before the Brewers opened up a three game series with the Giants, Chad was able to sit down with Will Clark for a brief interview. Parallels between the ’87 and ’89 playoff teams were made with the ’10 and ’12 teams, he talks about his first at bat against Nolan Ryan, and we discuss the new wildcard format.

After the Giants whalloped the Brewers tonight, we recorded our traditional “bonusode” at Zeke’s. The whiskey always tastes better after a win. You can listen to the bonusode here.

Brewers vs. Giants 8/29/14

Manny Pacquiao taking batting practice before the Brewers faced the Giants. The Brewers ended up hitting much like him.

Manny Pacquiao taking batting practice before the Brewers faced the Giants. The Brewers ended up hitting much like him.

Face it. We’ve had bad luck in the press box this year. We’re 1-4. This includes witnessing the self-destruction of the Colorado and Cincinnati games, and an extra inning loss in April. It’s been a tough one. The 280 was also closed. It felt like it was going to be a bad night.

But, sometimes life can surprise you.

I drove up early to deal with the traffic resulting from the 280 closure, but faced none after taking Third street all the way to AT&T. I arrived at 2:30 for a 7:15 game. This was weird. Fortunes smiled upon me when I was able to watch Manny Pacquiao take batting practice from right behind the screen.

And standing there beside me was none other than Will Clark. My favorite player. Ever.

After Giants players took hundreds of selfies with Pacquiao, Clark walked into the dugout with Marty Lurie to finish their interview, and shortly after, I respectfully asked Clark if I could grab a few minutes for an interview and he obliged. I’ll post that here and here and somewhere else, and on my wall, and bronze it. You’ll see it soon.

Or now, here, right here.

Then, I found out that we’ll have clubhouse access in September.

Then, the Giants played Milwaukee.

I won’t go into great detail, but the Giants scoring in the first five innings looked like this:

3, 2, 1, 2, 5.

13 runs in the first 5 innings set a season-high. In the FIFTH. Brandon Crawford, hitting 8th, had 4 plate appearances through 5. Pagan had 3 hits, and I’m sure I saw one fan consume at least 6 brats in the first 5 innings.

I’m sure the beneficiary, Ryan Vogelsong, bought the lineup a post-game meal, despite the fact that earlier in the year, he had one stretch of five starts without receiving a single run of run support.

It all comes in runs. Pun intended.

Posey tied his career high with five hits, and the rookie Joe Panik went 4-6. Every starter had a hit, except Crawford. You should probably just check the box score because we’re about to go to Zeke’s and record our bonusode, and I can’t wait to taste the victory whiskey.

UPDATE: You can listen to the bonusode here.

DOUBLE UPDATE: Although it’s already posted here, you can listen to my interview with Will Clark again and again here.

This is our first live call-in streaming show, ever! We apologize that Chad’s voice is a little soft for half the podcast, and we actually dropped the stream about 10 minutes in, causing mass hysteria as people couldn’t listen to us live, but we trudged through and took a couple of calls about the misfortune the Giants have faced over the last 3 games, including the Nats comeback and tonight’s inexplicable loss to the woeful Rockies. Episode 67: Doug Mirabelli +1 or Xavier Nady -1

No SF Giant has ever dared to wear this number for reasons we cannot reveal

[audio http://torturecast.podomatic.com/enclosure/2014-08-18T23_39_55-07_00.mp3]

We knew this day would come. We finally hit a uniform number that has never graced the back of a single SF Giant.

We’ll think of it as Xavier Nady minus 1, or Doug Mirabelli plus 1. Not sure what we’ll do about 100+, if we ever get there.

Willie and Chad talk Giants baseball on this off-day that finds the Giants starting a six game road trip to Chicago and Washington, only 3.5 games back of the bums and with a hold on the second wild card spot. Hey, they were further back of the Padres at this point in 2010.  Of course, the Dougie was also a popular dance then, so….

We cover the recent series, Morse’s hot bat, Panik’s hustling pinkie, Matt Cain’s season-ending surgery, Belt’s troubling concussion (and Sanchez’s), Susac, Posey, Pablo, perplexing Timmy, the second base curse, Jimmy Rollins, and what kind of player would manifest with Yaseil Puig’s raw talent with Hunter Pence’s love and respect for the game.

Also, next week around 9 pm PDT, Monday, August 25, we’ll be having our first LIVE CALL IN SHOW and will be streaming it LIVE on YouTube.

Mark it on your calendar, and be sure to call us from your phone and we’ll be sure to patch you in, even if you think Michael Morse is a bust this year.

That number is 415-799-SFG1

Again, that number: 415-799-SFG1.

Wait, I only need to repeat it on the podcast, not on this post…

Willie and I were joined by the wonderfully talented internet entrepreneur and Giants fan, Veronica Belmont in the press box for Game 2 against the Dodgers on 7/26/14. Unfortunately for her, she agreed ahead of time to be a guest on our traditional “bonusode” at Zeke’s after the game. Our regular favorite, Jen Cosgriff from Bay Sports Net joined us later in the episode as well.

We talk about the game, where the Giants are, our Hearthstone conversation with Hunter Pence during BP, the back-up, back-up, back-up, back-up, back-up second baseman.

Come travel down the path of despair, elation, drink orders, and “FU*& ITs!”

Also be sure to check out the post-game wrap here.
