Episode #216: Cuts, Rules and Stats

Brandon Belt was finally activated this week. He revealed that he suffered from COVID-19 in January, followed by mono. That’s a bad double-whammy. He’s questionable for opening day. (Randy Vazquez / Bay Area News Group)

Episode #215: Young Spring Power

Heliot Ramos (80) of the San Francisco Giants homered twice against the Chicago White Sox at Scottsdale stadium in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Thursday, March 4, 2021. Carlos Avila Gonzalez / The Chronicle

The Giants have a small power surge going in their lineup this week with two bombs by young phenom Heliot Ramos and solo shots coming from six other players. Jose Alvarez also signed with the Giants this week, further bolstering their pen with yet another lefty. Eric and Chad talk about how the Giants are building their roster with depth as a strength, since they lack some of the talent that lurks on rosters in LA and San Diego. We also look at another top 5: this time our top 5 Giants pitchers in our own lifetimes. Obviously, Bum and Timmy made our lists, but perhaps we’re old enough to sneak on pitchers from the 80’s? Look for us to regularly record every Monday throughout the rest of the season. We streamed this episode on Facebook Live and the video is accessible below.

Farhan Zaidi has been at it over the past four weeks, signing pitchers Alex Wood and Jake McGee and infielder Tommy LaStella, and trading pitcher Shaun Anderson to the Twins for outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. All of these acquisitions certainly makes the Giants incrementally stronger via depth, role, and situationally. Chad and Eric discuss the impact of these moves, the possible starting rotation, where the Giants’ farm system is nationally ranked, our top five Oracle Park moments, the Super Bowl and more.

Episode #212: New Year, Who Dis?

The Giants’ most recent signing was catcher Curt Casali. Not a big splash, but he’ll be a serviceable backup to Buster Posey and will compete with Chadwick Tromp. Earlier signings included a returning Kevin Gausman and RHP Anthony DeSclafani.

Happy New Year! We’re back! Eric and Chad hop aboard the first podcast train of 2021 to discuss the players that the Giants have signed so far this offseason, what their needs are, and what free agents are left to pursue to fill the holes. Boy, the Padres certainly loaded up with Darvish and Snell, eh? Egad. That said, we do think there is a good chance the Giants could sneak into the playoffs with an expanded playoff schedule like last year, but those details have not been settled, yet. With the demonstration of the NFL finishing its regular season during the pandemic along with last year’s MLB and NBA seasons, it seems likely that MLB will proceed with its regularly-scheduled spring training and season. However, the owners will push to delay the season to offset the financial losses of not having fans in most parks for the first couple months. The players won’t let that happen. We talk about this and more on episode 212 of the TortureCast, the podcast by and for fans of the San Francisco Giants.
