SF Giants Torture Report: Home Sweet Home

The San Francisco Giants just finished a 7-3 home stand and now head on the road for a 3-city, 10-game trip through the east. The Giants currently have a 16-15 record, and are 5 games back of first place Arizona and just a half game back from second place Colorado.

It was a weird and wild home stand that saw the Giants give up 15 runs twice, complete a 3-run come from behind rally in the bottom of the 9th, and there was also a Panda sighting on the mound at AT&T Park.. That’s 4 series wins in a row for the Giants for the first time since June 2016.

Every single player on the roster seemed to have a hand in helping the Giants to that 7-3 record. Continue reading →

Episode #137: Giants Split in LA…somehow

If you told us that the Giants were going to start the season without MadBum, Shark, and Melancon, yet split the first four games of the year in LA, we’d take that in an instant. We’d be even more flabbergasted if you told us that the Giants would be outscored 14-2 but STILL WIN 2 GAMES. Thank you, Joe Panik! His two solo shots in two consecutive games off of Kershaw and Jansen may have single-handedly prevented the Giants from being swept.

That said, winning the first two games of the series put the Giants in the driver’s seat to take the series, but they couldn’t do that, losing 5-0 and 9-0 in the last two games.

Chad and Eric dive into the stats of the series (mainly that the Giants were 1-20 with RISP, and Longo, Cutch and Jackson combined for 2-43!), the pros, the cons, the strengths and the weaknesses. But, hey…it’s only four games.

Who’s The New Guy?

Team loses 98 games, there’s going to be some new faces.

Last week it was the San Francisco Giants coaching staff’s turn to get an introduction. Today, it’s time to meet the new players in Scottsdale this season. Yesterday was the first day of full squad workouts so everybody should be in camp.

Somehow, the Giants have not had to deal with a strange free agent market. They have managed to stay below the $197 million tax threshold by being smart and making trades to fill needs. It’s not a hard cap, but the Giants have paid tax in the past and it accumulates. This is a way to hit the reset button on the competitive balance tax, or CBT. Nobody can accuse the Giants of tanking or shedding payroll. They are milking every resource available without selling the farm down the line. Continue reading →
